 Component Description
Job Map
This includes the steps that an end user / customer must accomplish to get the core functional job done. Low, Medium, and High Fidelity contextual job maps are produced so you have a better set of choices, and what you don't use (this time) is transparent and accessible for future use (in a database)... unlike traditional consulting engagements
Customer Success MetricsThese are what end users / customers use to determine how well they are able to accomplish a step in the job. You have a choice between my custom version (more approachable) or desired outcome statements (more pushback). Also, you get a set of them for each level of job map fidelity and you can have as few or as many metrics per step as you like (I recommend between 20 and 30 - they will need to be filtered down)
Situational FactorsDifferent groups of end users will struggle differently, and almost always it's related to the situation in which they execute the job. These are extremely challenging to uncover during interviews with a handful of end users as you might be limited to a narrow range of them within the group. I generate a matrix of factors on a spectrum of characteristics. I recommend 20-30 to consider for your survey
ContextsDifferent groups may be trying to get a job done in different contexts. This is a complicated topic, and I've trained AI how to figure this out when it's almost impossible to teach this to a young consultant. Many more seasoned consultants bring a lot of bias into this area. It's critical that we eliminate bias and inexperience because this step is critical in scoping the Job Map itself. I recommend 20-30 to consider
Financial MetricsThe end user of a product or service evaluates competing offerings against a set of financial outcome metrics when trying to decide which product or service to acquire. Knowing the buyer’s financial outcome metric informs a company’s go-to-market strategy and the value proposition it communicates to the buyer. These are often tedious to uncover; especially in B2B scenarios when end users cannot provide them. I recommend 15-25 to consider
Related JobsWhile many researchers are focused on a level of abstraction closer to their current solution(s), getting high-level rating and prioritization on jobs that they do before the job they're studying, at the same time as the job they're studying, and after they've completed the job they're studying help them to find new growth pathways as the core job (market) begins to mature.
Emotional JobsWhen end users are trying to get a job done, they often seek to feel a certain way, or avoid feeling a certain way as a result. These are extremely helpful for marketing messaging. These are not mapped, but they are prioritized in the context of the function job.
Social JobsWhen end users are trying to get a job done, they often seek to be perceived a certain way, or avoid being perceived a certain way as a result. These are also very helpful when crafting marketing messaging. These are not mapped, but they are prioritized in the context of the function job.
Ideal StateSometimes you just need a quick take on the market. So I will generate 20-30 ideal state characteristics for the Job to be Done. You can have them rated on whatever scales you desire. There are no rules here, just make sure you survey people who have actually executed the job and not some hypothetical end user.
Root CausesI can generate a list of 15 potential root causes that end users might confirm are the reason they can't achieve the ideal state. Alternatively, this exercise might be best done in-house because your designers, engineers, and operators may have a better sense of root causes given the responses gained from the Ideal State.
